Announcement list for Inland Mendocino Cooperative Weed Management Area associates at imcwma.org
Mon Mar 5 15:06:00 MST 2007

The Inland Mendocino Cooperative Weed Management Area is co-sponsoring,
with the California Native Plant Society - Sanhedrin Chapter and the
Mattole Restoration Council,
a field trip to the Upper Mattole Watershed for a native plant hike and
broom bash.
Here's the announcement- please post it if you have a suitable place to
do that (bulletin board, website) and
also forward to anyone you think might be interested in participating.

*Saturday March 17th - Upper Mattole: *A full-day excursion to the Upper
Mattole River near Whitethorn. In the morning, a hike into old-growth
Douglas fir, chinquapin, madrone and tanoak forest on property of the
North Coast Regional Land Trust will be led by Whitethorn resident
Cheryl Lisin. Understory species include vine-maple, red and black
huckleberries, hazel, oregon-grape, sedge and the town's namesake,
whitethorn (/Ceanothus incanus/). Other attractions at the trailhead (by
the Sinkyone Wilderness State Park Headquarters) include the confluence
of two streams with the Mattole River and restoration-in-progress of the
decommissioned road. The trail is strenuous due to steep slope. In the
afternoon, a broom bash along Lost River Creek will be held jointly with
the Mattole Restoration Council. This creek is one of the two that join
the Mattole at the trailhead of the morning's hike. Join local residents
in removing Scotch and French broom from the Upper Mattole watershed.
Tools will be provided.

Meet at 8:30 AM in the Safeway parking lot in Willits for carpool
formation. The drive to Whitethorn is 2 hours (one-way) in good weather.
Expect to return about 5:30 PM. Overnight accommodations are available
in the area for those wishing to return on Sunday. The trip will NOT be
cancelled for light rain - call Tara at 485-1198 for additional
information. Anyone interested in carpooling should RSVP.
