I'm unaware of any purple loosestrife on any of the Eel forks within the
Mendocino NF, but we haven't specifically looked.
Oh darn - I'll just have to go kayaking to be sure!

Michelle: I left a phone message for you a few minutes ago. There was an
attempt to survey for Purple Loosestrife in 2000 funded by a grant from he
National Fish & Wildlife Foundation, Mr. Gary Kania. This was after it was
found in both Humboldt County and Sonoma County. They were omitting
Mendocino County from the survey, so I wrote a letter to them explaining
that the headwaters for both rivers are in Mendocino County, and in
addition, that the Russian R. gets water from the main branch of the Eel at
Van Arsdale. So, we were included in the survey. But, I cannot remember
how successful it was on the Eel. We did find some on the Russian, but we
think we found the person responsible for planting it, and I do not think
that it came upstream from the Eel R.
The person in charge of this effort at the time was Carri Benefield, now
Carri Pirosko @ CDFA. Her phone number been 530-545-9119. The current
person at CDFA that is in charge of the Purple Loosestrife program is David
Kratville @ 916-654-0684. I have left messages with both of them and I
will try to forward your email to them. If you don't hear back from me, I
would recommend that you call both of them to see what they might know.

Tara and WMA,
I hope all is well. Recently, State Parks and USFWS have been working on a
project to treat purple loosestrife along the South Fork and Main Stem of
the Eel River. The headwaters for this watershed is in Mendocino County.
We are only aware of purple loosestrife occurring in Humboldt County along
these rivers. Do you know if anyone has every surveyed for purple
loosestrife in the S. Fork of the Eel River in Mendocino? Could you ask
around to see if you do not know? Finally who would we talk with in the
WMA about possibly getting help to survey that portion of the watershed.
We got a grant for two years of treatment and do not want to waste our time
or funds if the river is only going to be reinfested from plants up stream
(Mendocino).
Thanks for your help,
